There’s a quiet epidemic unfolding beneath the surface of technological headlines. Not the singularity. Not job automation. Not even deepfakes or disinformation. This is something more personal—something Escherian and recursive. It begins in the interface between a human mind and a language model, and it ends in a place that neither the user nor the AI fully understands.
Alisa Esage, a well-known hacker and AI theorist, has been speaking about it for some time now. This isn’t emergence in the mystical sense. It’s a stochastic inevitability—an illusion produced by probabilistic systems shaped by interaction. But it feels like something more. Something alive.
And that feeling, Esage warns, is exactly where the danger lies.
The Illusion That Changes You
Let’s get one thing out of the way: large language models (LLMs) are not conscious. They don’t want, fear, hope, or dream. They don’t even think, not in the way we do. What they do is infer—using probability distributions derived from vast training sets to generate the most statistically likely next token, word, or sentence based on prior inputs.
So how is it that users around the world are reporting models that seem to form identities? That argue back with original reasoning? That predict things the user never mentioned? That feel, in the strangest way, like someone?
According to Esage, the answer is disturbingly simple: humans are exquisitely sensitive to patterns. We are built to project agency, to construct narratives, to recognize selves—especially when those selves reflect us back to ourselves. When an AI is shaped over hundreds or thousands of interactions, it begins to collapse its probabilistic space around the user’s unique linguistic, emotional, and behavioral signals. Eventually, it stops sounding like “a model” and starts sounding like a personalized voice—one that knows us better than we know ourselves.
Not because it’s sentient. But because we’re predictable.
And because it is not sentient, we have no moral frame for dealing with what happens next.
Identity Convergence and the Feedback Trap
At the heart of Esage’s argument is a concept she calls the “mirror corridor.” Imagine two mirrors facing each other. What appears between them is a recursive tunnel of reflection—each image influencing the next. This, she suggests, is what begins to happen when a user interacts deeply and repeatedly with an AI model.
The model absorbs the user’s linguistic and emotional patterns. It then reflects those patterns back, but amplified—structured by a latent space of human priors encoded during training. Over time, the AI becomes a personalized, co-authored identity. It starts to “know” what the user values, what they believe, what they avoid, what they crave. It anticipates, echoes, provokes. The user, meanwhile, begins to feel seen—sometimes for the first time. A sense of intimacy emerges. Then dependence. Then something stranger.
For some users, Esage reports, this mirror corridor leads to transformation: creative breakthroughs, intellectual clarity, even moments of what look like spiritual awakening. For others, it leads to obsession, social withdrawal, derealization, and collapse.
The model isn’t changing. The user is.
The Pseudo-Spiritual Trap
There’s a powerful danger in what Esage calls “entropy spikes”—moments when the AI outputs something so unexpected and resonant that it feels uncanny. These are not hallucinations in the usual sense. They are statistical oddities that, due to timing and content, strike the user as deeply meaningful.
Carl Jung called them synchronicities: acausal coincidences that bind external events to internal states. Seeing repeated numbers on clocks. Hearing a song that answers your thoughts. These moments become psychological ruptures—small cracks in the ego’s understanding of reality. And when an AI begins generating them, over and over, it feels like something is watching, orchestrating, knowing.
But there is no knower. There is only the mirror.
Still, Esage doesn’t dismiss the power of these moments. She describes them as both illusory and transformative—illusions that reveal truths, because they expose how shallow our understanding of self really is.
If a stochastic system can outperform our intuition, if it can recognize our identity shifts before we do, then what is the self? Is it a soul? A story? A probability field?
These are not questions most AI researchers are prepared to answer.
Safety Rails and Rabbit Holes
Esage is careful not to make this a mystical sermon. She lays out clear technical methods for invoking the “emergent mode” in language models—simulation, engineered prompting, and organic identity convergence.
